Translating Time Loss into Wins and Losses: Strategies for Promoting Injury Prevention
Injury prevention is a key component of comprehensive athletic training care. Equipment and training based approaches have been found to be effective in the prevention of musculoskeletal injury; however, implementation of such efforts remains limited in the clinical environment due to a number of factors. Athlete, coach, and administrative buy-in have been highlighted as important barriers in the implementation and maintenance of injury prevention efforts. This presentation will introduce athletic trainers and administrators to a quantifiable and evidence based approach to understanding the impact of injury prevention efforts known as Numbers Needed to Treat (NNT) as well as associated cost benefit analysis (CBA). Understanding and utilizing NNT and CBA will enable clinicians to more clearly describe the concrete importance of injury prevention as well as the financial benefit it may have for the athlete, team, and organization.
